Explosion at Northeast Philadelphia MRI

No one hurt after small explosion in the basement

Crews rushed to the scene of a small explosion in Northeast Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon.

The blast happened around 4 p.m. in the basement of Pennsylvania Open MRI on the 6500 block of Roosevelt Boulevard, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department.

The building was evacuated and no one was hurt, firefighters said.

Firefighters could be seen at the scene ripping debris out of the building. After about an hour or so the incident was ruled under control.

It's unclear what caused the blast but a preliminary investigation showed some sort of electrical explosion, according to investigators.

A spokesman for TriState Imaging Group, which operates the facility, said Wednesday that the explosion didn't have anything to do with the MRI machines.
