Ex-Teacher Sentenced for Relationship With Student

A former softball coach at a northern New Jersey high school has been sentenced to five years' probation for engaging in sexual activity with a student.

The Record reports 29-year-old Jillian Clementi also must register as a sex offender and is barred from teaching or coaching anywhere in the country.

Clementi taught social studies at Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township and coached softball at Wood-Ridge High School. She was arrested last year and charged with sexual activity with a 17-year-old Wood-Ridge student in 2009, and eventually pleaded guilty to criminal sexual contact

Bergen County prosecutors said the incidents took place at a Lyndhurst home where Clementi once lived. Authorities learned of the activity after a student who had heard allegations about the relationship told school officials.

Clementi's attorney, Brian Neary, told The Record that Clementi has apologized for her actions, and he argued during her sentencing on Friday that his client was not a sexual predator.

"This was an isolated incident,'' he said. ``She was a great athlete and a smart person.''
