Ex-Pitt Pharmacy Professor Gets Probation in Drug Case

A former University of Pittsburgh pharmacy professor will spend six years on probation in a first-offender's program after pleading no contest to 23 charges that he used school and federal grant money to buy prescription anti-anxiety drugs and painkillers to which he was addicted.

Phillippe Melograne, the defense attorney for 52-year-old Billy Day, tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Day got caught up in his addictions.

He's already made restitution to the university, finished a drug rehab program, and will have drug, alcohol and mental health evaluations.

A university spokesman says Day has resigned as a professor.

He was charged in September 2013 with obtaining controlled substances through misrepresentation since January 2011. University police began investigating after the school's pharmacy chair contacted them about "suspicious" purchases Day was making.
