Ex-Abortion Doc Sentenced to 30 Years for Drug Charges

A Philadelphia doctor already serving life in prison for performing rogue abortions has been sentenced to a concurrent 30 years for distributing painkillers.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, is serving life without parole for killing three babies born alive during illegal abortions. That investigation grew out of complaints he ran a lucrative "pill mill'' at his West Philadelphia clinic.

Gosnell pleaded guilty in July after the murder trial to charges that he illegally distributed OxyContin and other painkillers.

Prosecutors say he allowed addicts and dealers to fill prescriptions that were often sold or traded on the street.

Gosnell said in lengthy remarks Monday that he was only trying to help addicts through his novel treatment program.

But U.S. District Judge Cynthia Rufe says he did more harm than good in the neighborhood.
