Police Capture Escaped NJ Prisoner in Philadelphia

A man convicted on drug charges who escaped from the satellite campus of a South Jersey prison was captured by police in Philadelphia, according to investigators.

Police say 43-year-old Panagioti Souris surrendered without a struggle in Old City near 6th and Market streets Saturday afternoon.

Souris' escape was the first from a department-operated facility in 2015, according to Department of Corrections spokesman Matt Schuman.

Schuman says authorities at the Ancora facility of Bayside State Prison noticed about 6 a.m. that Souris was not in his bed.

Department of Corrections officials then used a canine unit to search for Souris near the facility. Local police later got involved.

Souris was serving a maximum sentence of five years on two counts of heroin charges. Schuman says Souris was a minimum-custody convict.

Schuman called escapes "extremely rare."
