Ducks Killed with Darts at Popular Pond

The Pennsylvania Game Commission says someone is killing ducks with blow-gun darts at a popular southwestern Pennsylvania pond.

WJAC-TV reports the mysterious killings have been going on for about two weeks at Spring Dam Park in Roaring Spring. That's a small community in Blair County, about 80 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Albert Zellner, a commission wildlife officer, says the ducks are being shot with target arrows and blow-gun darts, some of which are four inches long and made of sharpened steel.

Zellner says that's not only a cruel and illegal way to kill the birds, but a hazard to small children who visit the pond to feed the ducks. Some of the darts have been found sticking up out of the muddy bank as temperatures rise.
