Drug Dealer Admits to Selling Deadly Heroin

Passaic County prosecutors say a drug dealer has admitted selling heroin that led to a man's death.

The Record reports 26-year-old Quasheem Reels of Paterson pleaded guilty Friday to the rarely used charge of drug-induced death/strict liability.

Prosecutors will recommend that he get a seven-year term when he's sentenced April 4. He may have to serve nearly six years before becoming eligible for parole.

Reels could have faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted at trial.

The state's Strict Liability in Drug-Induced Deaths law was passed in the late 1980s, during the heights of the crack epidemic. It equates the act of selling drugs with homicide, and enables the state to convict a defendant without having to prove any intent.
