Philadelphia police say the driver of a bus that rolled on to its side, injuring more than a dozen day workers, didn't have the proper license to operate the vehicle.
Sixteen of the 22 workers on the bus were hospitalized and one remains in critical condition following Monday's 3 p.m. crash at the 2800 block of East Westmoreland Street in Port Richmond.
The bus was exiting I-95 north at the Allegheny/Castor Avenue off-ramp when, according to the driver’s account to police, the driver had trouble breaking and he lost control of the vehicle.
Police said Tuesday the driver wasn't certified to drive a vehicle with air brakes.
Officer Mark Menke says it appears the crash was caused by a malfunctioning air compressor on the re-purposed school bus that is owned by Del Val Staffing.
The workers were returning to Philadelphia from a Belmawr, N.J. snack food plant when the bus crashed.
Police have not released the driver's name.
