Driver Slams Into Store During Traffic Stop

A driver is in custody after police say he crashed into a Bala Cynwyd store while being questioned by police.

Police say the suspect was obstructing traffic Wednesday around 1 p.m. on North Highland Avenue in Bala Cynwyd. An officer nearby approached the vehicle to speak with the man. It was then, police say, that the man drove off, crashing into the Walls & Windows store on 200 Bala Avenue.

“We just heard a bang and a loud screeching noise,” said Greg Straff who was nearby when the crash happened.

After slamming into the store, witnesses say the suspect got out of the car and walked out of the rubble.

“The cop asked him to get on the ground,” said Seth Straff. “He got on the ground, he admitted it. He said the keys were in the car, I stole the car. I almost got away. He had no shirt on, just pants.”

After an officer apprehended him and placed him inside a police car, witnesses say the suspect kicked out the window of the vehicle and was screaming loudly. The man was then taken to the Lankenau Medical Center for drug and alcohol testing, according to a law enforcement source.

Police have not yet revealed the man’s identity. He has not yet been charged.
