Driver Arrested for Hitting 8-Year-Old Girl, Leaving Scene: Police

Police say they believe the driver was using drugs at the time of the accident, but are waiting the results of a blood test

An 8-year-old girl was hit by a car while riding her bike Thursday night on the 100 block of Powell Lane in Upper Darby.

The young girl flew off her bike, broke her leg, and suffered injuries to her face and head, Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said at a Friday press conference. She is listed in serious condition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The driver who hit the young girl stopped momentarily and then sped from the scene, Chitwood said. He was pulled over a few minutes later by cops on routine traffic patrol who stopped the speeding car. Once they determined the car was involved in the accident, the driver was taken into custody, police said.

The driver, who has been identified as Sukhjimddr Singh, 33, is currently being held on $200,000 cash bail.

Singh may have been using drugs at the time of the accident, according to police, who say they found empty packets of what they think was heroin under the driver's seat. However, they are still waiting for results of his blood test, Chitwood said.

Singh is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident.

"All too common we see these guys who run over our community members, whether they're children, whether they're the elderly. And they take off and flee.  In my opinion, these guys should be put in jail and they should throw the key away, period, period... no if, ands or buts," Chitwood said.
