Driver Accused of Killing Mom, Tots Sentenced in Fraud Case

A man who allegedly struck and killed a Philadelphia woman and her three young sons while drag racing has been sentenced to 27 months behind bars in an unrelated ambulance fraud case.

The defendant, 23-year-old Khusen Akhmedov pleaded guilty in federal court in December to involvement in a Medicare fraud of more than $1.5 million. Prosecutors said he recruited non-emergency patients for ambulance trips and promised them kickback payments.

Akhmedov still faces murder charges in the July 16 crash that killed Samara Banks and her three young sons -- ages 5, 23 months and 7 months. Her 5-year-old son survived with bumps and bruises.

Witnesses told police Akhmedov was speeding on the night of the crash. They say he and another man Ahmen Holloman, who is also facing charges, were allegedly racing down Roosevelt Boulevard when Akhmedov lost control of his car, plowing into Banks and her children, according to police.

Defense attorney Todd Henry disputes his client was drag racing.
