Drive-by Shooter Targets Driver Waiting at Northeast Philadelphia Traffic Light

A gunman pulled up to a Northeast Philadelphia intersection and opened fire overnight leaving a man fighting for his life.

The shooting around 11 p.m. Thursday at Summerdale and Cheltenham avenues in Oxford Circle left a 24-year-old shot three times, Philadelphia police said.

A civilian that witnessed the shooting rendered aid to the victim – laying next to the open door of his car – before medics arrived and rushed him to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition, police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

“We got information from witnesses that the victim, who was driving a Volvo… he was at the light at Summerdale and Cheltenham avenues facing south when a white vehicle going north pulled up next to the victim’s vehicle and the driver fired multiple shots through the driver’s window and into the driver’s window of the victim’s car,” Small said.

Police searched for clues early Friday and hoped surveillance video could help them track down the shooter – a man in his 30s with long hair and a beard who wore a v-neck T-shirt and blue jeans – who drove off – possibly in a Buick – north on Summerdale Avenue.
