NBA Hall of famer and 76ers legend Julius Erving plans on placing his 1983 championship ring up for auction, according to Bloomberg.com.
Bloomberg reports that several items from Erving’s personal collection will be up for online bids by SCP Auctions beginning on October 28 through November 19.
Erving plans to auction off his championship ring from the 1982-83 NBA season. During that year, the 76ers went 65-17 and swept the Los Angeles Lakers in the finals. Erving also plans to auction off his ABA championship rings from 1974 and 1976 with the New York Nets, Most Valuable Player trophies from both the NBA and ABA as well as several game-worn jerseys, according to Bloomberg.com.
Bloomberg also reports the minimum bid for the NBA ring is $25,000 and $20,000 for the ABA bid.
Erving is currently in the midst of financial difficulties, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The paper reports that the Georgia Primary Bank filed a lawsuit against him on October 18, claiming that he owes more than $200,000. The lawsuit says Erving’s company, "The Erving Group Inc. of Atlanta," was given a $1 million line of credit back in April of 2009 which was due the following April. It says a balance of $205,777.84 has not been paid. It’s unknown whether the lawsuit is related to his decision to auction off his personal items.
Other items to be auctioned off include Muhammad Ali’s red trunks worn during his boxing match against Joe Frazier on March 8, 1971, dubbed the “Fight of the Century. The bat that baseball legend Lou Gehrig used to hit his last home run as a New York Yankee will also be up for auction.
Erving played 11 seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA after playing in the ABA. The small forward/shooting guard known for his high flying dunks was an 11-time NBA all-star, one-time NBA MVP and named as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.
