Dispute Over Effort to Put NJ ‘Blue Laws' to Vote

A northern New Jersey group seeking to end Bergen County's blue laws is embroiled in a dispute over how many signatures it needs to put the question to voters.

The laws prohibit Sunday shopping in most stores in the county. Twenty years ago voters kept them on the books by a wide margin.

Now, the group Modernize Bergen County tells The Record of Woodland Park it has collected 2,600 signatures, or 100 more than required by law.

Not so fast, says County Clerk John Hogan. He tells the newspaper the law actually requires 55,000 signatures, which equals 10 percent of the voters registered to vote in the most recent general election. The courts could decide the matter.

The deadline for submitting signatures for the November election is Sept. 20.
