Dewey Beach Draws Crowd for Skimboarding Contest

An amateur skimboarding competition has drawn a big crowd to Dewey Beach to continue a 32-year tradition.

Dewey-based Alley-Oop Skim organizes the competition each year. It dates back to a time when Dewey Beach was one of the largest skimboarding centers in the nation.

The News Journal reports Saturday and Sunday's competition drew 165 competitors and hundreds of onlookers. Skimboarding combines features of surfing and skateboarding. Competitors came from 13 states and six nations.

Some of the competitors described the surf as ``small'' for part of the day Saturday, but steady waves kept the contest going.

Contest founder R. Harry Wilson says Saturday's surf was pretty good. But he says beach replenishment work has taken some of the power out of the waves breaking near the shore.
