Detention Hearing for Abortion Doc

Monday's detention hearing could determine Dr. Kermit Gosnell's next location.

Attorneys for a local doctor accused of performing illegal abortions in his West Philadelphia clinic are scheduled to be in court on Monday for a detention hearing.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 70, was arrested on January 19, 2011 and charged with eight counts of murder. Gosnell allegedly killed seven babies born alive by cutting their spinal cords with scissors. He’s also allegedly responsible for the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar who died after a botched abortion. Prosecutors claim Mongar overdosed on anesthetics prescribed by Gosnell.

Gosnell’s wife and eight other suspects were also arrested in connection with the case.

Gosnell is currently in prison without bail. Monday’s detention hearing could determine his next location. It’s scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
