Deputy Shot With Own Gun at Berks Co. Courthouse

A training exercise comes to an end when a Berks County sheriff deputy is shot in the leg

A Berks County sheriff deputy was injured Monday morning when his gun went off inside the Sheriff's office at the Berks County Courthouse.

Deputy John Parsons was participating in a training exercise with another deputy, according to investigators.

The deputies were trying to determine if a suspect could reach into a new departmental issued holster and pull the trigger, said police.

During the exercise the deputy grabbed Parsons' weapon, which was in his holster, and it accidentally discharged.

Parsons was shot in the leg and underwent surgery at Reading Hospital. Investigators say his injury is serious but not life threatening.
