Dentist, Daughter Sentenced in $5M Fraud

A Philadelphia dentist will be incarcerated and his daughter will spend time under house arrest for submitting almost $5 million in fraudulent medical bills to insurance companies.

A judge on Monday sentenced 73-year-old Owen Rogal to one-to-seven years in prison. His 52-year-old daughter Kim Rogal was ordered to serve 11-to-23 months under house arrest.

Officials say the Rogals billed 15 firms at least $4,800 for pain treatments that were actually worth $800 at most. Authorities say they pocketed more than $1 million over the past decade.

The Rogals pleaded guilty to insurance fraud and related charges in May after a 15-month investigation.

They were also ordered to pay almost $373,000 each in restitution to seven insurance companies.
