Delco Priest Removed

Father Louis C. Bier, pastor of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Springfield, has been removed from the church.

A Delaware County priest has been placed on administrative leave by the Philadelphia Archdiocese.

Father Louis C. Bier, pastor of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Springfield, has been removed from the church. The Archdiocese says the removal is in response to concerns regarding his suitability for ministry. They also say the concerns are not connected to any complaint of inappropriate behavior with minors.

While on leave, Father Bier will not exercise his public ministry, administer any of the Sacraments, wear clerical garb or present himself publicly as a priest, according to the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese also says he has not lived at the parish since prior to last weekend. Archbishop Chaput plans to appoint a parochial administrator as soon as possible.

Parishioners at Saint Francis held a private meeting Monday night to learn more about Father Bier's removal.

"We just heard that Father is no longer saying mass here and no longer living at the rectory," said Barbara Mulhern. "We don't know much more than we did on Sunday. I don't think we're going to for a long time, if ever."

"I'm pleased with what the priests and deacons had to say tonight," said one man. "They are in a very difficult situation and are doing the best they can."

The Archdiocese also released the following statement regarding the reason for Bier’s removal:

There are a variety of reasons why a priest could be found unsuitable for ministry. As Father Bier's situation is currently under thorough examination, and no determination has yet been reached, it is not possible to provide further information at this time.
