Woman Struck After Shooting at Armed Home Invader: Police

A woman is recovering after police say she opened fire on an armed home invader and was shot in the process.

Police say three masked men broke into a home on the 3900 block of South DuPont Highway in Townsend, Delaware Tuesday shortly after 2 a.m. The suspects, who were all armed, approached the residents inside the home, a 51-year-old woman, 31-year-old man, 22-year-old woman and 1-year-old boy, and demanded money from them, police said.

The 51-year-old woman then took out her own weapon and exchanged gunfire with one of the suspects, according to investigators. She was then struck at least once in her lower extremity during the shootout. Police say another suspect then assaulted the 31-year-old man.

The masked men then stole an unknown amount of money and fled the scene.

The 51-year-old woman and 31-year-old man were both taken to Christiana Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not released a detailed description of the suspects. They continue to investigate. If you have any information on the incident please call Detective Dan Grassi at Troop 2, Glasgow, at 302-365-8441.
