Delaware Teacher's Aide Has Sex With Teenage Student: Police

A Delaware school district placed a high school teaching assistant on unpaid leave amid allegations she had sex with one of her teenage students.

Georgetown Police charged Indian River School District paraprofessional Nicole DeGirolono with four counts of sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust, authority or supervision on Monday.

DeGirolono, 23, engaged in sex acts with a 17-year-old male student assigned to her school, said police.

DeGirolono worked with 14- to 18-year-old immigrants in the district’s Accelerating Pre-Literature English Language Learning (APELL) program, said district spokesman Dave Maull. The program -- housed in the George Washington carver Academy in Frankford -- gives extensive instruction for students from mostly Spanish speaking countries without much education prior to coming to America, said Maull.

The district placed DeGirolono on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, said Maull.

A judge arraigned DeGirolono and sent her to Sussex County jail on $80,000 secured bond.
