Delaware Refinery Faces Penalty for Air Pollution

Delaware's environmental secretary has issued more than half a million dollars in penalties against the Delaware City oil refinery for air pollution violations.

An order announced Wednesday calls for a cash penalty of $460,200 and another $69,000 to reimburse the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control for investigation expenses.

The order covers more than a dozen air quality violations since the 2011 restart of the refinery through January of this year. The refinery has 30 days to request a public hearing on the penalty order.

Environmental secretary Collin O'Mara says the refinery owners have made significant improvements in reducing emissions but must be held accountable for unpermitted releases.

PBF Energy bought the refinery in 2010 for $220 million after Valero Energy said it was halting operations there.
