19-Year-Old Man Accused of Murdering Grandfather

A 19-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly murdered his own grandfather.

Police say 69-year-old James Steppi was found dead in his home at the Park Place Trailer Park on Indiana Road in Wilmington, Delaware by his daughter on Friday. During their investigation, police determined Steppi's grandson, 19-year-old Shawn Hagerty, was the last person seen leaving the home in the victim's 2003 Oldsmobile Alero.

Police spotted the vehicle in the area of Vansant Road and a chase ensued. Hagerty was finally apprehended in Landenberg, Pennsylvania and taken into custody, police said. He was transported to the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J-Avondale Barracks and charged with murder, robbery and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

He is awaiting extradition on all charges. A police spokeswoman said Saturday that she didn't know whether Hagerty has an attorney yet.
