New Castle Co. Working to Occupy Vacant Homes

The county is announcing a Vacant Home Purchase Program Wednesday.

New Castle County officials are launching an effort to reduce the number of vacant homes in the
county.

Under the county's new Vacant Home Purchase Program, to be announced Wednesday, qualified buyers can borrow up to $10,000 for down payments and settlement costs to buy vacant houses in eligible zip codes.

Applicants do not have to be first-time homebuyers, and the loan is forgiven after five years if the home remains the owner's primary residence.

Funding for the program comes from federal taxpayers through the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Neighborhood Stabilization Program. That program is administered by the Delaware State Housing Authority
