NBC10 was there as family and friends gathered to say goodbye to the Army Guard troops

Close to 175 Army Guard troops from Delaware's 153rd Military Police Company deployed for Afghanistan on Thursday.

Family and friends gathered for a departure ceremony at the Army Aviation Support Facility in New Castle, Del. to say their goodbyes.

The troops are scheduled for a year of active-duty. Their mission will be to help train Afghan troops in security operations, including roadside checkpoints and foot patrols.

Before heading to Afghanistan, the troops will report to the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst for further training specific to their mission.
