Del. Sea Turtles Hatch Despite Storms Irene, Lee

Sea turtles hatched after the eggs survived two tropical storms and freezing temperatures.

Turtles have hatched from Delaware's first documented green sea turtle nest after surviving two tropical storms and a cold snap.

The News Journal of Wilmington, Del., reports that the turtles hatched late Sunday in Lewes. Suzanne Thurman, executive director of the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute, says the turtles and remaining eggs will now be taken to North Carolina to be released in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

The eggs were laid in August at Cape Henlopen State Park. They were first moved to higher ground to prevent them from being washed away by high tides, and survived Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. During a cold snap in October, they were moved to a climate-controlled lab at the University of Delaware.
