Jeffery Barnes, 39, was charged with his sixth DUI Friday morning.

A Delaware man was charged with his sixth DUI early Friday morning after making an illegal turn, police said in a press release.

Jeffrey W. Barnes, 39, of Bear was arrested around 1:15 a.m. when a trooper stopped his SUV after he made an illegal U-turn at Coastal Highway and John J. Williams Highway in Rehoboth Beach.

Police say that in an attempt to avoid stopping for authorities, he turned into a Walmart shopping center and stopped the vehicle. He hopped out of the car and tried to run, but was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

Barnes is charged with felony driving under the influence, resisting arrest, aggressive driving, illegal U-turn, driving the wrong way on one way road and various other traffic-related offenses.

He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $9,400 secured bail.
