New Castle County Police have charged a couple they say falsely reported a kidnapping to get money from a 73-year-old relative to pay off a drug debt.
Forty-one-year-old Cory Hitchens and 30-year-old Cheryl Baynard, both of New Castle, each have been charged with attempted extortion and other offenses. They are each being held on post $750 secured bail.
Police say the victim contacted them after Baynard said she was assaulted by three people who forced their way into the apartment and kidnapped Hitchens. Baynard said the three demanded money or Hitchens would be hurt.
Police say they searched the home and found Hitchens hiding in a bedroom closet.
