Del. Burglaries Rise as Violent Crime Drops

Nearly two-thirds of thefts involved residential properties: police

Violent crime is down in Delaware, but burglaries are up and police say in many cases thieves are entering homes through unlocked doors and windows.

State crime figures show almost half of residential burglaries and a third of nonresidential burglaries did not involve a forced entry.

Cpl. Trinidad Navarro, spokesman for New Castle County police, says it may sound elementary, but locking doors and windows is important because in a lot cases burglars are just walking in.

The data include records of about 30,000 burglaries reported from January 2007 until last week. Nearly two-thirds involved residential properties.
