DUI Suspect Dies in Philly Police Custody

Philadelphia Police officers arrested a man in Northeast Philly Friday afternoon on suspicion of drunk driving. Hours later, he was dead.

Authorities said they brought the 29-year-old man to a dention center at 750 Race St. in Center City around 3:45 p.m.

He sat in a cell awaiting a breathalyzer test until officers went to check on him around 10:15 p.m. -- more than six hours after he arrived at the center, police said.

The officers, who found the man unresponsive in the cell, said he appeared to have stopped breathing, according to reports.

Medics rushed him to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:31 p.m., investigators said.

The cause of his death is unknown and an investigation is underway.
