DNC ‘Leave-Behind' Project Planted in West Philadelphia

The Democratic National Convention “leave behind” project — a health and wellness garden at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pediatric Care Center in West Philadelphia — got its official unveiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday afternoon.

The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association led the $300,000 fund-raising effort to cover the costs of the project, and joined with the Credit Union National Association [CUNA] and RealClearPolitics, a Washington-based nonpartisan publication covering politics and policy, as lead sponsors of the effort that also involve CHOP and its employees.

The creation of the garden was the result of a time-honored credit union tradition of “leave-behind” projects that provide long-term benefits to communities in cities hosting national party conventions after the event is over.

Since April, CHOP has hosted more than 200 volunteers who have worked in the garden at the Karabots Center through a corporate volunteer days, CHOP employee nights, and a CUNA/DNC/RealClearPolitics volunteer day.
