Boiler Explosion in Central Jersey

An exploding boiler injured three in Manville on Saturday.

Paramedics responded to 112 Huff Avenue in Manville, N.J. for a reported explosion.  When they arrived on the scene, they found a boiler unit in the building's basement had blown up, causing serious injury.

Among those hurt was the home's 88-year-old owner, who was transported to Somerset Medical Center.  Two PSE&G workers also sustained injury in the accident and had to be evacuated by helicopter to area trauma centers.

After an investigation, Manville police do not believe the explosion was suspicious.  The explosion happened after the boiler overheated, likely from a mechanical malfunction.

The home is located in the Lost Valley neighborhood of Manville, frequently flooded by severe weather.  Following Hurricane Irene, several feet of water ran through the town's streets, and a YouTube video documents two National Guard personnel carriers becoming stranded and stuck in the flooding.
