DA Investigates Food-for-Ticket-Dismissals Allegations

The district attorney is investigating alleged parking ticket fixing involving Marathon Grill.

A city manager retired amid allegations of dismissing $50,000 in parking tickets in exchange for free and discounted food from the restaurant chain and caterer, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Now District Attorney Seth Williams is involved, reviewing the inspector general's findings - which also implicate five other city employees who handle parking ticket appeals - to determine whether there was any criminal wrongdoing.

Alternatively, the matter may only constitute a violation of the city's ethics rules, including the acceptance of gifts (employees are prohibited from accepting them). Toward that end, the city's Board of Ethics, which has the authority to issue financial penalties, is reviewing the inspector general's findings as well.

Marathon Grill frequently serves the city in Center City, where parking is tough to come by, and is one of the restaurants that provides lunch to jurors in city courts, the Inquirer reported.

The restaurant had no comment about the allegations.
