Blaze Burns Roughly 300 Acres in Burlington County

A fire that burned roughly 300 acres near New Jersey's Wharton State Forest has been contained.

The fire in Shamong Township was first spotted around 9:45 a.m. Saturday by staffers at the New Jersey Forest Fire Service's Medford Fire Tower. It continued to burn throughout the day, but no evacuations were ordered and none of the roughly 30 homes in the area were damaged.

Firefighters set up a large containment area around the fire and set backfires to stop the main blaze. They also conducted backfire operations between the main fire and the homes.

The fire was finally contained late Saturday night. But crews remained on scene early Sunday to monitor conditions.

Wharton State Forest spans Atlantic, Burlington and Camden counties.
