Body Washes Up on Long Beach Island Shore, Man Liked to Swim at Night

Authorities say the body of an Ocean County man was found washed up along the shores of Long Beach Island.

A Beach Haven resident walking along Brant Beach between 78th and 79th streets discovered the body floating in the surf Tuesday morning.

Police originally suspected the man took his own life, but a spokesman for the prosecutor's office says authorities now believe his death was an accidental drowning.

Spokesman Al Della Fave says the family told authorities the man regularly swam at night. He was identified as 59-year-old John Creevy of Barnegat.

Della Fave says Creevy lived alone and wasn't reported missing.

The medical examiner says the body had been in the water for at least eight hours. There were no signs of trauma to the body.
