Crash Suspect Shot Trying to Ram Officers With SUV

Man also rammed several police cars and parked vehicles

A 23-year-old Wilmington man who crashed into a house with his SUV is in critical condition after being fired at by five officers Sunday.

The man had crashed a a 2006 Saturn Vue SUV into the concrete steps of a house in the 100 block of Stroud Street.

As officers approached the vehicle to try and get the man out of the SUV, he managed to get his vehicle off the steps and drove off on the sidewalk, heading west to Anchorage Street, police said.

As more officers arrived at the scene, the man rammed into several police cars, numerous parked cars and then drove directly at the officers, who in turn fired their weapons at the suspect, according to a police statement.

Officers on the scene gave the man first aid until paramedics arrived and took the man to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Detectives are conducting interviews and gathering evidence at the scene.

According to police, 5 officers fired their weapons. The officers involved have been members of the Wilmington Police Department in a range from two years to 5 1/2 years. They have been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.

One officer injured his hand while trying to avoid being struck by the suspect's vehicle. He and another officer, whose car was rammed by the man's SUV, were treated and releaed from Wilmington Hospital.

Police said the suspect's identity will be released after criminal charges are made.
