Head-on Crash on Martin Luther King Drive in Philadelphia Kills 1, Injures 2

A nasty head-on crash left a person dead, two hurt and closed all lanes of the Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park during Wednesday morning’s commute.

The crash happened under an overpass along MLK Drive near Sweet Briar Drive around 9. An initial investigation showed that a Toyota Venza traveling southbound toward Center City crossed over the center line and struck a Toyota Rav 4 traveling northbound, said Philadelphia police.

The crash left an unidentified passenger in the Rav 4 dead and the drivers of both cars hurt, according to police.

Medics rushed the victims to the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. The passenger died at the hospital, the driver of the Venza -- a 34-year-old woman -- remained critical with head injuries and the driver of the Rav 4 -- a 43-year-old man -- suffered minor injuries, said investigators.

As SkyForce10 hovered overhead you could see emergency personnel responding to the crash between the two silver sports utility vehicle vehicles. Both SUVs appeared to have severe front-end damage.

You could see medics and firefighters placing one victim onto a stretcher.

The roadway remained closed for more than two hours after the wreck, finally reopening around 11:30 a.m.

No charges were immediately filed.

This crash came during a bad morning on area roads. As rain fell, crashes occurred in many parts of the region including a wreck along City Avenue where a man died after losing control of his car.
