A northern New Jersey sheriff plans to crack down on commuter buses after a driver hit a light pole that toppled onto a stroller, killing an 8-month old girl.
Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari says officers will conduct random checks to make sure insurance and driver's licenses are valid.
Schillari spoke Thursday after the arraignment of Idowu Daramola, The Queens, N.Y., resident is charged with death by auto, reckless driving and using a cellphone while operating a vehicle.
Daramola not enter a plea. He has not yet retained a lawyer.
Authorities say the 48-year-old's bus veered off a street in West New York on Tuesday and struck a pole, which fell onto the stroller and killed Angelie Parades. They say he was using a cellphone at the time.
