Corbett Criticizes Rendell Bid for Philly Papers

Corbett told a Philadelphia radio show host Thursday that he doesn't think it's a good idea for politicians to own newspapers

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is critical of a bid involving his predecessor for control of Philadelphia's two major newspapers.

Corbett told a Philadelphia radio show host Thursday that he doesn't think it's a good idea for politicians to own newspapers, and added that he considers Ed Rendell to be a politician still.

Corbett is a Republican and Rendell is a Democrat.

A Rendell-headed group including wealthy businessmen submitted a non-binding “letter of interest” in Philadelphia Media Network earlier this month. Rendell calls it a civic-minded group with deep pockets that doesn't need to turn a quick profit on the venture.

The company is currently controlled by two hedge funds, Alden Global Capital and Angelo Gordon, after a $139 million takeover of the company at a September 2010 bankruptcy auction.
