Cops Raid, Close Upper Darby ‘Nuisance' Bar

A man was murdered at Cheers Bar on Mar. 18

Dozens of law enforcement officers raided and temporarily closed down an Upper Darby bar after reports of gambling and underage drinking.

More than 50 officers raided Cheers Bar located at 68th and Market Streets around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators said they arrested more than half a dozen people for drug possession and underage drinking. Officials also seized three illegal gambling machines.

Investigators say they also temporarily closed the bar due to several health and fire code violations.

“We’re not going to tolerate this kind of activity from people outside of our community, in a great community like Upper Darby,” said Upper Darby Township Mayor Thomas Micozzie.

District Attorney Mike Green wants a judge to classify cheers, under the law, as a “nuisance bar” and close its doors for good – a process that could take several months.

“That’s why it's important for us to build a record that becomes very, very difficult to attack,” said Green.

Upper Darby Police Department Superintendent Michael Chitwood said officers responded to more than 300 problems at the bar since 2007.

The raid comes more than a week after a man was shot to death in the bar’s bathroom. Police are still searching for the person responsible for shooting and killing 24-year-old Tyrik Richardson.
