Community Mourns Shooting Death of Hardworking Mom

Friends and family gathered in the Tioga section of the city Monday night to mourn the death of a local mother.

Malaysia Jesse, 29, was found lying dead on the street Sunday around 7:20 a.m. on the 3200 block of Bailey Street. Investigators say she was shot once in the cheek and once in the side of her head.

“She didn’t deserve to be laid out on the street, dead for hours,” said her sister Priscilla Jesse.

On Monday, at 7 p.m., a candlelight vigil was held for Malaysia, known to her friends and family as “Lay Lay,” on the same street where she was shot and killed.

“She was a loving mom, hard worker and a medical assistant pursuing her medical degree,” said her brother Kevin. “She always loved knowledge and education. She was very positive.”

As friends and family, including Malaysia’s 10-year-old son, mourned and reminisced, many are now calling for justice.

“Whoever did it, come forward,” said Annette Jesse, Malaysia’s niece. “Tell, tell. The Lord is going to deal with you. You’re not going to have any peace or rest.”

No arrests have been made in the woman’s death. Police have not yet revealed any information on any suspects.
