Filmmaker Sues Community College of Philadelphia, Alleges Race, Gender Discrimination

A filmmaker is suing the Community College of Philadelphia, alleging the school discriminated against him because of his race and gender.

Brarailty "Rel" Dowdell, who is black, has taught as an adjunct for the college for more than a decade.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Dowdell says he made it through initial hiring interviews for full-time positions in 2005 and 2015 but was stopped both times.

The lawsuit filed last week states that just three black men have been hired full-time in the English department out of about 50 hires over the last 15 years.

Dowdell also filed a complaint with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. That agency has not made a ruling. The college said it did not feel Dowdell was qualified.

The college declined to comment on the lawsuit.
