Code Red: Excessive Heat Advisories in Effect

The Tri-State area is getting hit with some high temperatures this week. We offer some tips to stay cool.

Several counties in our area issued excessive heat advisories for the rest of this week.

Montgomery County has also issued a “Code Red” hot weather heat warning beginning Wednesday and ending this Sunday. The Code Red warning is based on forecasts from the National Weather Service.

This hot weather heat warning is only issued when the heat index for a specific day is anticipated to surpass 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Burlington County Health Department has also issued a heat advisory for the same days this week.

Accordingly, the Burlington County Freeholders will continue distributing electric fans to qualified elderly and low-income residents.

‘Everyone is susceptible to heat-related illnesses, but some people are at a greater risk than others,” Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien said.  “Infants and young children and persons over the age of 65 are most at risk for suffering a heat-related illness.”

NBCPhiladelphia and county officials are offering up some tips to stay cool and avoid heat related illness:

  • Avoid caffeinated and carbonated beverages and alcohol – these fluids dehydrate the body rather than hydrate like water and sports drinks.
  • Wear light colored, absorbent, loose fitting clothing
  • Stay inside air-conditioned or shady areas whenever possible
  • Limit exercise whenever possible. If physical activity is necessary be sure to hydrate properly before. Try to complete exercise early in the morning or later at night when temperatures cool down.
  • Check up on elderly people and small children at least twice per day.
