Coatesville Men Charged in Shooting Death of Teen Boy

Three Coatesville men have been arrested and taken into custody after a six month investigation for the death of a 14-year-old boy, who was struck by a stray bullet at the Regency Park Apartments.

All the men are in their early twenties, and have been identified as Zaequon Tanel Closson who has been incarcerated, while Maurice Lamar Scott and Rodney Duane Gaffney have been arraigned and set for bail at $750,000.

The career criminals have been charged with six crimes including Criminal Attempt Homicide, Persons Not to Possess Firearms, Aggravated Assault, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Possessing Instruments of Crime, and Simple Assault.

The investigation has been taking place since March, when multiple gun shots were fired in the parking lot in the 400 block of Regency Dr. The teen boy went to the second floor of his home after hearing the gunshots outside, and was shot in his stomach by a stray bullet. He was taken to Paoli Hospital where he was in fair and stable condition, and upon his release has since made a full recovery.

Chief John Laufter, of the Coatesville Police Detective and Patrol Division, is happy to see this case cleared after months of hard work. He says the culmination in the investigation is a direct result of the citizens of the City of Coatesville and Police Department working together in conjunction with the cooperation and prosecutorial assistance of the Chester County District Attorney’s Office.
