City Council Mulls Curbing “Wreck Chasing”

Council to vote on thwarting tow truck operators who jockey to be first at accidents

Philadelphia's city council is scheduled to vote on a plan that seeks to thwart tow truck operators who aggressively jockey to be first in line at accident scenes.

Council is scheduled to vote Thursday on a proposal that would rotate works among towing companies to avoid so-called “wreck chasing” among towers.

If the ordinance is approved, towing companies would also be required to take vehicles to lots controlled by the Philadelphia Parking Authority, which would oversee the industry.

The legislation was sparked in part by an accident-scene shooting allegedly involving two competing towing companies.
