College Freshman Hurt From 3-Story Fall

Another Pennsylvania college student has fallen off a building.

A male student was hurt yesterday afternoon after falling three stories from a building on campus at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.

Officials say the male undergrad fell from a third-story outside stairwell of a residence hall.

He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he remained in stable condition Thursday morning, according to college spokeswoman Kathleen Spigelmeyer.

The school released the following statement:

We are greatly concerned about the condition of one of our undergraduate students, who has been hospitalized following a fall from a third-story outside stairwell near Fournier Hall on the campus at approximately 3 p.m. The student suffered multiple injuries and was immediately transported to the hospital. The College is withholding the student’s name pending notification of his family. The College is cooperating with the Philadelphia Police Department, which is investigating the incident.  We urge all the members of the College community and the public to keep this student and his family in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

The college didn't release the student's name or hometown but did say that he is expected to make a full recovery.

The building from which he fell -- Fournier Hall -- is a co-ed dorm for undergraduate students that features single, double and triple rooms as well as suites first used by the university in 1938, according to the college's website.

It's not clear what led to the fall.

Philadelphia attorney Bob Mongeluzzi, founder of Saltz, Mongeluzzi, Barrett & Bendesky, who has represented plaintiffs in more than 100 fall cases -- including several student falls -- hasn’t looked into this specific case but he is able to give background on falls.

He says that falls happen at universities due to an array of factors including alcohol usage, immature decision-making, older buildings, suicide and other factors.

There is no cause yet in this case and Philadelphia Police told NBC10.com that the investigation is ongoing.

Last week a 19-year-old student visiting her boyfriend at Temple University died after falling off a roof during an off-campus party. And, the week before a 19-year-old Millersville University student was found dead near a silo. It’s unclear if he fell from the silo, police said.
