Landfill Worker Backs Into, Kills Co-Worker at Delaware Facility: Police

A man operating heavy machinery backed into and killed a coworker at an area landfill Friday afternoon, Delaware State Police said.

The deadly incident happened around 12:30 p.m. at the Cherry Island Landfill between the Delaware River and I-495 in Wilmington.

Police said a 52-year-old man operating a Caterpillar D6R LGP Crawler Tractor was pushing around trash when he backed up and struck Jose Luis Garcia-Hernandez who was standing behind the machine. Police said the 42-year-old Newark man died at the scene.

Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the state’s Collision Reconstruction Unit were called in to investigation the deadly incident.
