Chancellor's Salary Tops University President's Pay

The first-ever health sciences chancellor at Rutgers University will get a higher salary than the university president, and a package of perks that include a car and driver.

The Star-Ledger newspaper reports Dr. Brian Strom will earn a base salary of $675,000, or $25,000 more than the president - and be eligible for more than $100,000 in annual bonuses.

He'll also get a $12,000-a-year housing allowance.

Strom has worked for more than 30 years at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is an executive vice dean at its medical school.

Rutgers officials say Strom is taking a cut in his base pay by leaving the Ivy League university, where they say he earns $688,000 in addition to over $250,000 in bonuses.

Strom starts his new job Dec. 2. He'll oversee all Rutgers medical, dental and health science schools.
