Caught on Tape: K-9 Helps Capture Suspect

A dramatic arrest involving a police dog and a burglary suspect was captured on video.

A dramatic arrest involving a police dog and a burglary suspect was captured on video. It began Thursday around 8 a.m. at a home in Douglas Township in Berks County.

Police say the homeowner noticed a Maroon Chevy Blazer in his driveway which eventually sped off. The homeowner called police and reported the vehicle description.

Around noon homeowners in Amity Township noticed their door was kicked in and they had been robbed, according to investigators. Police were notified and given a vehicle description similar to the one given by the homeowner in Douglas Township.

Investigators then say a Reading Police officer on 422 spotted a vehicle that matched the previous descriptions around 12:30 p.m. The officer pursued the vehicle as it fled and got off at the Armand Hammer Boulevard exit towards High Street in Pottstown, according to police. The car then crashed into another vehicle on Armand Hammer and High streets until it came to a stop in a nearby field. Police say two men then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

The officer apprehended the driver of the car, Michael Demarina, while the other suspect kept running toward a wooded area nearby, according to police. Police then brought out a K-9 officer to help catch the suspect. Video captured the police dog spotting the suspect and helping other officers drag him out of the woods.

State police has been investigating both suspects over the last ten days in connection with more than 100 burglaries in Delaware, Berks, Montgomery and Chester counties.

Michael Demarina (not pictured in the video) was the driver of the getaway car, according to police.
