18 Catholic Schools Win Appeals, Others Wait

Of the 24 proposed closings 18 will remain open, school officials announced Friday.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced its decision to allow the majority of Catholic elementary schools set to close next year to stay open.

Of the 24 proposed closings 18 will remain open, school officials announced Friday.

A decision on four high schools targeted for closure will be postponed until next week, school officials say. They include Conwell-Egan Catholic High School; Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls; Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School; and West Philadelphia Catholic High School.

The postponement is due to recently recieved information regarding potentional financial donors that has be explored, according to a press release issued Friday.

"I recognize how anxious all of those affected by this decision are to hear the final outcome." Archbishop Charles Cahput said. "I want to see this resolved too but this decision is too important to be made without considering absolutely every fact and all serious, substantive proposals even if they don’t fit the time frame originally set.  We owe it to our teachers, administrators, students and school families.”
